Let me try to explain this clearly:
Trauma makes us feel really helpless - like nothing we do can stop bad things from happening to us.
Feeling helpless so much as a child wires our brain to go back to helplessness automatically anytime we get overwhelmed, even now.
So now whenever we face something intense, our body reacts "I can't handle this!" even if we could.
We start avoiding more things so we don't have to feel helpless again. But then avoidance makes us believe we really CAN'T handle life.
The way to heal is take back power little by little. Show yourself you CAN handle hard moments through brave baby steps.
Teach your brain and body over time that the present moment is truly safe now to handle, even when scary echoes happen.
Write a new story going forward where instead of shutdown and helplessness, you meet any challenge with courage and handle it.
You control the story from here on out - one brave choice at a time!
